The cardiovascular system, also referred to as the circulatory or vascular system, is an organ system that permits blood to circulate and transport nutrients such as electrolytes and amino acids, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones, and blood cells to and from the cells of the body to provide nourishment and help in fighting diseases, stabilize temperature and pH, and maintain homeostasis. The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, a muscular pumping device, and a closed system of vessels called arteries, veins, and capillaries.
